Ultrasounds: Get the Facts
A positive pregnancy test is just the first step. Next up, no matter what route you decide to take for your pregnancy, you will need to get an ultrasound. TryLife Center offers free limited obstetric (OB) ultrasounds.
Why do I need an Ultrasound?
- Pregnancy confirmation
- Determine gestational age (how far along you are)
- Determine if pregnancy is within the uterus
What to Expect
An ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce a visual image of the inside of your uterus. It’s non-invasive and can be done in a single appointment. Usually, a woman has an ultrasound early in her pregnancy to confirm she’s actually pregnant and again later to check on the health of the fetus.
During a limited OB ultrasound, the registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) applies a gel-like substance to your abdomen. The gel helps transmit sound waves. A hand-held device called a transducer is rubbed over the gel to record the echoes of the sound waves it picks up. It’s those echoes that create an image on a computer screen.
Are you eligible for an ultrasound?
Someone who is eligible for a limited OB ultrasound at TLC Clinic must meet the following criteria:
- At least 8 weeks since your last menstrual period
- No active bleeding or significant cramping
- No IUD present
- No history of tubal ligation (had your tubes tied)
- A positive pregnancy test performed at TLC Clinic (this can be done at your appointment) OR proof of a positive pregnancy test from a doctor
